I would bet it's just the seal. They are not hard to do. Depending on where you change it, be ready to catch any oil that comes out of the pumpkin and be sure to re-fill it with oil.
The seal on my '01 Rear diff. is also leaking and I don't have an owners manual. I was just wandering which lubricant is recommended to put in when I change it.
Ultramagdan is right on the oil.
You will need a synthetic oil. One thing to keep in mind is you will need a inch pound torque wrench to tighten the pinnion back to the same setting its at now. You just cant tighten the pinnion till it stops. I would jack the truck up and put it on stands. Next remove the drive shaft. Remove the wheels, and brake drums. Now with your inch pound torque wrench see how much torque it takes to rotate your pinnion, and write it down. Note a beam type torque wrench works best. Now slide your brake drums on to use the brakes to help you brake the pinnion nut loose. Remove pinnion yoke and seal. Install the new seal and pinnion yoke (with light lube) around seal surface. Tighten the pinnion nut till you get the same drag you recorded earlyer. TIGHTEN A LITTLE AT A TIME DO NOT OVER TIGHTEN OR EXCEED DRAG THAT WAS RECORDED before the dissassemble of the yoke.
I just got my differential cover gasket changed and everything went great. I was going to take it back to the dealer and make them do it because I just bought the truck, but now I know how it was done and what's in it. It cost me $65.95 for all the gear oil, additive, and rtv. Thanks for all the great info.
