Angry 98 - GEM module drain hole

I have a 1998 expedition 4x4 and it seems that every time that it rains it wont start. it cranks over but then dies. I heard about the GEM module getting wet, but I am not sure exactly where it is located. I think it might be on the passenger side on the quarter panel. on one thead it mentioned about sealing a drain hole that was located near the GEM module. does anyone know where this drain hole is located or if it could be something other than the GEM module.

I am having the same problem with my 97 4x4. I went ahead and had the windsheild replaced as i thought that might be the source of the leak. Now i have a dead battery. I did find out that if i left the a/c fan on overnite that the blower would continue to run after the key had been pulled... I did have the airbag code 5/3 or 3/5 (power interup) but this morning i did not.. Any ideas where else to look for leaks?

I just had this done last week at the dealer. I didnt have my perfect windshield replaced, but I did have it resealed by an outside shop. 50.00 bucks But also check the fuse panel on the driver side right by the hood release. If you see any rust around that medal bar down there your gonna need to replace that fuse box too. I had them both replaced Gem and that fuse box. It rained like hell last weekend but all is well.

Question Close to the same problem

I have a '98 we just bought 6 weeks ago. Found that when my wipers are on and I hit the turn signal, they go off (of course I found this out when it was raining cats and dogs, 65mph on the highway). I have to continually mess with it or leave my signal on to get them to work again. Began testing other items on the steering column and found when I turn on the flashers, the turn signals go out and the only way I got them back on was to wiggle the turn signal arm.
I have also noticed something running right after I turn on the car and right after I power it off. It sounds like some type of motor running, but I don't have anything running but the radio most of the time.
Do the turn signals and wipers run from this gem module?
Any ideas on what the motor noise could be? Any insights would be great! I really like my Nav, but beginning to feel like it has a lot of ghosts for only 55K miles on it.

Sounds like your problem is the old "courtesy wipe" found on earlier Expy's. Warranty returns were high in areas that had a lot of dry and dusty weather during the year, and they later changed the switch due to the terminals building up with dust (but it happened to my dad's in Michigan, so go figure). The turn signal/wiper issue is the problem with the combination switch. I believe if you take off the steering column shroud you can remove the switch and swap out for another...late 00MY, 01MY and 02MY switches should swap right in.

Thank you. Thought it might be the switch, but after reading about the gem module, I had doubts. Thanks for everyone's quick responses!
