Power loss--need help

This may have been discussed in a thread already, and if it has, I'm sorry to bring it up again.

Anyway, I've got a 2004 (Build date 03/04) that I bought new six weeks ago. The truck has about 3,200 miles on it.

Five times it has lost power for about 2-5 seconds while driving. Each time the fuel light came on, even though I had plenty of diesel in the tank. The first three times it happened while I was turning, the last two times it happened on a straight road.

If anyone has an idea or can pass the previous discussion thread on to me, that would be great.

Thanks in advance

It's always good to welcome another Texican to the site. There are a whole bunch of us hangin' out around here.

Tribike: Where are you located and where did you purchase the truck? Are you buying your fuel at the same location? Have you tried any fuel additives and have you experienced any other issues / concerns?

Salado

I live in Salado--about 45 minutes north of Austin on I35.

I try to fill up at the same place every time. There is a Truckstop south of Belton at the US 190 exit I stop in to fill up. My wife drives a 2000 Excursion with the 7.3 (90,000) which I put Diesel Kleen in every time. Her gas milage has increased. I wasn't sure if I should put an additive in right away in my truck, or let the engine get some miles under its belt, but I have thought about putting some of the DK in.

I bought the truck at Covert in Austin. I had a Chevy, but my wife made me trade it in on a Powerstroke--happiest day of my life when she told me that.
Anyway, I got a 250 Lariat CC 4x4 for $36,500, which I thought was a good deal.

Other than the power loss it has been a great truck.

Thanks Tim for the links.

Tribike, Welcome to the neighborhood. I am in Round Rock just north of Austin. I got mine at MacHaik Ford on IH 35 at Westinghouse.

Hey Bubba,

Sorry to hear about your problems. I would recommend a couple things for you to try before taking it to your dealer. First, definately fill your tank up and add the according amount of Power Serivce, Stanadyne or whatever your preference. Mix it for the 32oz to 50gal and drive it for say 30 or so miles and see if it helps. Next, check your HFCM, it's under your driver side frame rail, just cut open a milk jug and drain it, say for about 20 or so seconds or if it stops, be on the look out for a clear gel like substance in your filter. Some trucks are known to have this this in the filter and it can cause the same problems you are experiencing. I have yet to hear what it is, or how it got there but my best guess is from the truck sitting on the lot to long with untreated fuel and growing algea.

Best of Luck,
Corey

We'll get-r-fixed. Let us know what happens and if these don't help we'll give you some other quick things to try.

TriBike, Try Mac Haik, I know a number of people who have dealt with Covert, including me, and had bad experiences. Go to Mac Haik and see Jason Norman, Service Advisor.

Thanks for all the replies. I was thinking about taking it to Fisher-Vincent Ford in Belton, but knowing that MacHaik is a good dealer, I'll probably go there. Thanks for the contact info.

It's funny you mentioned it sitting on the lot for a long time. According to the info on the truck, the truck was logged into inventory on 3-25-04. I bought the truck the first Saturday of September. It had been driven about 350 miles before I got it, but it was dealer traded from down in South Texas.
I think I may have some growth going on after sitting for 5 months.

It did happen again this morning pulling out of the driveway; however, this time not only did the fuel light come on, but a squigly line below it came on. I can't figure out what the line is, there is no mention of it in my owners guide. The line looks like this ~

Thanks again fellas

Never mide the bit about the squigly line--glow plugs. I thought I had waited for them to warm up.

Btw, if you go to Mac Haik ask the service advisor Jason Norman to use Johnny, the diesel tech to work on it. That guy is highly qualified. Apparently other dealers send engines to him for tear down, etc.
