tachometer malfunctioning

tachometer malfunctioning
I have a 1992 ranger sport with the 3.0v6 and a short time ago the tachometer will at times (most times lately) go up to around 3500 and stay even with the engine off and the key on. Can anyone tell me if it is operated by a sensor that can be cleaned or changed?, and if so, where is it located. I am at witts end trying to find any info on this matter.

The tach is probably bad. There is no sensor on a tach, they are driven off an ignition system signal. I think the tach in your vehicle is driven off a computer signal.

Thanks for the info. It wasnt what I wanted to hear because thats what I was afraid of, but thats how it goes sometimes. Its been a great truck so far for me. It has 187,000 miles on it with no clutch, transmission or motor troubles. I figured when I bought it I would be putting a clutch in before it was paid for. Ford has really done well with the rangers. The only things I have replaced on it in 11 years is tires, brakes, starter, altenator, mass air flow sensor and just kept all the fluids changed regularly. I guess I will add a new tachometer to the list soon. Thanks again for the info. This is a great forum!
