rearend swap??

Here is my question to you fine folks, The 3rd member in my 92' 2wd ext cab started howling like a big dog on my way home from work Wensday, Have the chance to swap the whole rearend (unbolt from the leaves and roll in) from a 88' 2wd ranger, also a 4 banger 5spd. Does anyone know right off if the driveshafts are the same length as well as the width??

Thanks to anyone(s) who can help!

In part, the interchangability is dependent upon the wheelbases of the two trucks. On the safety compliance decal on the driver's side door of each truck will be given the wheelbase in inches. Check that out first.

Then, of course, what engine does each truck have? What transmission?

All of these factors truly come into play in figuring out a driveshaft swap or interchangability.

I hope this is helpful to you at least to some small degree.

Thanks for the reply, My truck is a 2wd drive ext cab, 2.3 5spd. The donor truck I want to take the rear end from is a 88 2.3 5 spd reg cab, also a 2wd. I plan on using my driveshaft to eliminate any problems on that end, Just wondering if the width is the same, and also what gearing might this 88 have 3.73??

Thanks again

If you look at the safety decal located on the driver's side door, it will give you an AXLE code on the lower line of the decal. For example, it may read "72" or "82" or "F4" or "K6". That code will tell you what axle ratio it is and whether or not it is a limited slip differential. If that decal is missing, there will--or should--be a metal tag on each of the differentials that give the ratio, whether it is open or limited slip, the ring gear diameter--probably 7.5-inches--the build date and the plant that built it.
If you can post that information, I can break that down for you. Too, I can do better on the driveshaft info from that.

I did some checking on a website--I would prefer using a print catalog, though, to be honest--and it shows both trucks taking the same u-joint at the transmission and at the rear end. That, of course, is good news.

However, the driveshafts are different lengths.

Be that as it may, it seems from the information given at the website I checked, you can use the long extended cab driveshaft from your 92 after you install the rear end from the 88.
If you want to get the information off of the door decals and/or the rear end tags, I will still be glad to decipher them both for you.

I hope this is of some help to you!

Your 92 has a 8.8 rear end and the 88' has a 7.5 rear end the flat flanges are most likely different bolt patterns the 92 is probably a bigger bolt pattern. The drive shafts are the same length, axels same width Good Luck
