I finally got around to hooking up my cb radio. Ive connected it all kinds of ways and i keep getting accelerator noise. i currently have the power connected to the power to my trailer brake and the ground in the same place as my alarm. ive even tryed straight to the battery with the same result.
Any help is greatly appreciated and thank you all in advance
Best way is to go straight to the battery and I'd route it to the passenger side battery so that it as far from the IDM as possible, also check your connections on the antennas make sure they are not corroded/loose/frayed. You may need a torroid filter, available at most radio shacks, to go on the power cord to hep with the alternator noise.
Make sure your antenna is grounded. Sometimes with a small radio you won't ever really get it out, a noise filter will help some. But I would make sure everything is grounded, coax is tight, and I would just run the juice straight to the battery.
These rigs are notorious for EMI moving across the power circuits. You'll find many threads from CBer's across the forums on this issue. Many attribute it to EMI from the injectors, although I'm not positive that it has been "officially confirmed". Diesels just seem to experience it more than the rest The dual alternators also seems to be a likly culprit.
Listen to 77HIboyboy and try those first, but you'll get more of the EMI out by cleaning up the power source with a power conditioner. They're not to expensive and can ususally be found at Radio Shack or the like. One added benifit is it will help extend the life of the equipment operating off it.
Part of my job in the military is to eavesdrop on radars and radios. You'd be surprised at how easy it is to distinguish what kind of power source a unit is operating off of just by listening to the static around the main signal.
