I've found that a pintle hitch is easier to use. There is a bit more noise when turning or reversing due the the bigger clearances in the pintle setup.
It is easier to hook up a pintle and it is easy to verify that the hitch is properly hooked up. A ball hitch can look like it is properly connected when it is not.
I never had any trouble backing up a pintle. The only thing I could see is it has the ability to slide around in the ring. Say if your backing straight and the right tires fall in a ditch, it'll **** over to the left, but other than a shake and bang it'll still go backward. Only problem I've see with a pintle is taking up the "slack" when stopping/starting/backing etc.
Good point on it being easier to make sure it's connected, but thats why I like the bull dog hitch setup so the side folds closed and locks on the collar
I've never had any problems backing a pintle hook either. I think it's easier overall, like previously mentioned. Hooking it up, releasing it, and backing it. Just my .02 cents
I could not remember having a problem with the small IR generator trailer that had an eye, but, I did not back it up much. So, I will go ahead building my new trailer with a lunette and disregard any naysayers.
Having pulled both I will say the lunette eye/pintle hook is easier to hook up and can usually carry more tongue weight. On the down side, you cannot use weight distribution and the trailer tends to "hammer" a bit going down the road due to the 2" or so play in the lunette eye and pintle hook. I never had a problem with either one - pretty much your choice.
