Hi all! Thought with the wealth of information here someone could help me out quickly...?? Just turned on the tap to find we have no hot water. It's an electric heater and the breaker is not tripped. How do I check the element and/or thermostat and is it hard to replace? I do want to fix it 'cause I'm planning to switch it for a bigger gas unit this winter but that requires some other work. Minimum couple days wait to get a plumber here. Anyone know about these heaters?? Thanks in advance (from me, and my wife who just had a cold shower before going to work!!).
Remove the upper and lower covers of the water heater. (Make sure the breaker is off first!) Look at both elements. One of the elements should have a small round trip breaker reset on it. Push it in and see if it clicks back in.
We used to have this happen if the heater was getting old and we were using alot of hot water all at once.
Are you handy with a meter?? Pull the covers and make sure you have 220v going to the thermostat, then to the element. If you do turn off the power and check continunity thru the element.
Min of a couple days for a plumber if I worked that way I wouldn't have a job! Drippy faucet ok...no hot water come on now.... Might want to try calling another.
Thanks for the input. Hit the reset and it's working again. Makes me wonder why it tripped though.?? Time to start shopping for another. Yeah, it stinks to try and get any trades around here. They're all busy and can charge whatever they want, which is why I do 99% of stuff myself.
That red button operates by temperature and means the water got too hot. If it trips again replace the thermostat - it's not cycling the element like it supposed to.
The breaker on a water heater will trip a lot of times if the elements are caked with minerals. If your water is very hard, this will happen fairly frequently.

What is a tankless water heater and how does it work?
Tankless only produces hot water when u need hot water. There is NO storage ...so no sediment occurs. Theres no heating of water that is not in use! You have a thermostat simular to the one that heats your home...so u can set it for any temp at anytime! I sell & install a lot of them. Noritz is the brand u want...dollar for dollar the best. www.noritzamerica.com
