I've got a 91 Ranger and I'm told I need a new solenoid, but I thought I would post and see what you guys have to say.
When the engine is cold, it starts fine. But when I stop and attempt to restart while the engine is still warm, it won't turn over. It seems I have to wait a certain amount of time for the engine to cool before I can start it again.
When the engine doesn't start, I can still turn on the radio, fan, etc.
Just so I'm clear ... does it CRANK at all when this happens?? If it doesn't crank at all, I would be suspicious of the solenoid, however, it could be a couple other things (safety neutral switch being one strong possibility). But, if it cranks & doesn't start, you'll need to hear from someone FAR MORE INTELLIGENT THAN MYSELF! GOOD LUCK!
Test it. Get it hot(ie won't turn over) and use a pair of plyers or jumper cables to short the post. If it turns over when you do this, its the selenoid. If not its the probaly the starter.
