When I have my programmer tuned to the "race" or "extreme" setting, and going under WOT in 3 thru 5 gear, the clutch slips, but, on the "safe tow" program, no slippage at all. Does it need replacing, or is it being over powered ... only has 67k on it now. Any eye deers ?????
is it the stock clutch? A local parts store clutch only lasted me 15k because it was warped a little bit ( i beileve the pressure plate was warped) are you sure you dont have any oil leaks possiably getting on the flywheel?
Yeah, its the stock clutch with about 67k on it. There arent any leaks, that I am aware of or i can see. Is there a good aftermarket clutch to look into, or does this mean I cant put the truck on the high setting?
You'll probably only get another 20K or so out of the stocker, even if you leave it on the tow program. The standard Luk repset will hold anything you can throw at it short of aftermarket injectors, and costs less than a stock replacement.
I installed a Luk solid replacement in my truck about 4,000 miles ago great choice on my behalf. Definetly worth the money and manual labor. Nice soft pedal and shows no sign of weakness with the LPG injection. A little touchy at a slow go compared to a stocker but I got used to it.
I installed the 12" LUK clutch and flywheel, replacing the stock dual-mass about 2500 mi ago. Yes, MUCH lighter pedal pressure. It makes different noises than the stock one at low speed - growling for instance. Plus it seems to like the next lower gear than stock.....3rd @ 25 MPH instead of 4th for stock. I used to be able to let the clutch out in 1st at idle, no throttle and just walk away, now it needs throttle. And when slowing down to make a turn in 4th, it makes a sound almost like an exhaust brake. Otherwise it seems to operate just fine. Is this normal?
The noise you hear is normal, mine does it. It's just the gears in the tranny. I heard some where, not saying it's true,or that I really beleive it, but the gears in the ZF are loose do to high torque applications.
i have seen many many ford powerjokes with the 6 seed growl in low and first. i have aslo seen the growling fixed by putting a new pilot bearing! i think that the ford pilot bearing only lasts like.....20,000 miles max! well, thats what i think about the growling. it isnt normal, buy i have never seen that bearing mess up a tranny or clutch, so i'd say let her growl!
well my pilot bearing was replaced when I did my clutch install. So I don't think it is a bad pilot bearing. The clutch was installed about 4,000 miles ago.
if you are bogging down a little in gears and getting a growl, its called neutral roll over rattle. Nothings going to break, its not bad for the trans. The last clutch i had in my truck before the luk had alot of roll over rattle, esp in neutral clutch out ideling. It had a tsb with the clutch when i put it in that said it would have more rattle then normal due to it being a HD clutch and not having the damping ability of a stock clutch.
If the pilot bearing was going bad, it would make noise with the clutch in or when engaging the clutch, not while in gear.
