got it home

I finally got my 460 home now i see problems 2 exhaust studs are broken and 1 exhaust bolt is broken as well behind the carb looks like black sute the carb dont look broken hopefully just a new gasket has any one put a 1" spacer under there carb if so what improvements did you get also shoud i have the exhaust manifolds planed or just try new gaskets

i have a spacer under mine. if you use a 4 hole spacer you gain a little bottom end if you use the open hole spacer you gain a little top end. i dont think they make a huge difference but maybe 5-7 hp.. i think the 460 breaks the exhaust studs is because of the torque when the motor twists against the exhaust. i maybe wrong but my 460 has 1 or 2 broken also, its very common.

Exhaust studs breaking is common due to heat fatigue. You can use candle wax and a blow torch to remove the broken studs. Just heat the stud until it glows then stick the candle against the glowing stud. The wax will lubricate the threads to the point that the stud will turn out a lot easier then just using heat alone.

Unhappy broken studs

I"m running into nothing but problems i broke 2 exh man bolts flush to the head so i guess its machine shop time this is a 1977 460 i have a set of d3 heads in good shape with no broken studs i planned on putting new gaskets in the motor any way can i use these d3 heads
