fuel pump trouble

I have a '85 351W HO in my F250. It has a feed & return line (similar to the 460's hot fuel option, except I have a mechanical pump).

The trouble is that I have a clear fuel filter, and when running, the fuel trickles in, even when the rpms are up, and I think it is causing a lean condition.

i've run new lines the whole way back to the gas tank; however, they are rubber gas line hoses.

what I am wondering is it those feed&return pumps has a diaphram in them that will leak the gas back the return line when the truck is running if there is a hole in it? I haven't noticed any gas in the oil, but I really haven't smelled the dipstick.. This is a project truck, so it has been run once in a while for the last couple years.

I don't really want to replace the rubber lines with steel (as it sucks to bend) and I really don't want to use braided stainless if I don't have to (I'm not actually sure how to connect it to the factory '85 sender, and it is $$$$$$).

any clues?? I have also thought about switch over to a carter electric pump so I am pushing through line, instead of pulling.1

Sometimes too much information causes unnecessary concern. Clear fuel filters fall into this catagory. They will have a "bubble" or appear to be partially filled much of the time. I am told this is normal. If the motor runs OK I would consider ignoring the amount of fuel in the filter. I have a clear filter on my truck and had the same concerns you do. After I read that a "bubble" is normal, the truck seems to run much better. ( I quit worrying)

I too have a clear filter housing. The air space is normal. I am willing to say that nothing is wrong with the flow.

I would agree with you; however the filter has a trickle in it. I wouldn't be concerned if it was 1/4 full or 1/2 full, but there is just a little trickle on the bottom, and it wants to cut out a little when you are on it..

if a trickle is normal, that is cool... if not, I want to fix it

Based on the additional information, it sounds like you may have a problem. My clear filter varies from being full of fuel to a fairly large bubble. (Just describing this for information purposes.) Since you are having symptoms that may be fuel starvation related, your concern is valid. Hopefully others who see this topic can offer some advice. I have no experience with your system ,so can't help. (too new for me!)
