Just when I think I got all the bugs worked out something else happens. I discovered/ uncovered a new issue after getting my 570cfm Holley SA tuned (which is new) and timing set. Truck really runs good so I took it out on the road, found a straight stretch and floored it. It climbed up to around 90 pretty quick and then all of sudden felt like a governor kicked in. I let off the gas for a second and then it would take off. Floored it again and got back up to 85-90mph and it did it again. Let off the gas and then it started acting like it was running out of gas (which I assume the carb did) for about an 1/8th mile then it was back to normal as long as I drove it normal.
I have a new sending unit, new rubber hose to the metal line (not new) to a new rubber line to a clear filter, to a new rubber line, to a new fuel pump, to a new rubber line line to a regulator, new line to the fuel pressure gauge on the metal line to carb (that is setting on an Edlebrock 289 performer intake). Before I put the regulator on the gauge would read between 3 to 13. After I put the regulator on it reads 0 (set on 5.5). The clear filter doesn't fill all the way either but the clear sight window on the carb always shows fuel when I look at it.
Has anyone had a similar experience and fixed it? A clear filter is probably not a good idea but wanted to use one so I could see the fuel until I got it tuned, but other than that, is there anything wrong with my set-up as I described? Or is it something with the dura spark ignition (new ICM, distributor, and MSD Blaster coil) that just won't handle it? I didn't notice what the RPM was when it happened but it runs about 3k at 65mph..
This is what I learned: The Spectre Fuel regulator is a piece of crap. I took it off and installed a glass cased filter in it's place and removed the plastic clear filter. No problems for now
