My '92 chimes when I leave the lights on or the key in the ignition and open the door (actually, my ignition cylinder is broken, so it chimes even when there is no key in the cylinder, until I jiggle it).
I agree with aikigod, the chime should sound when you open the driver side door (door jamb switch) with the lights on or the key in the ignition cylinder (this is what the shop manual states). You should find the chime module under the dash left side from the ash tray most towards the firewall. Do the cab lights come on when you open the driver door? If not you may check the driver side door jamb switch.
LoL Dieter
My 95 doesn't chime, it buzzes loudly. I don't think it buzzes when the lights are left on though.
My 90 Mustang used to chime slowly if you left the keys in (which I do a lot of times), but chimed faster if you left the lights on. That was pretty handy.
XL's Buzz, XLT's Chime. Atleast that's the way I've always understood it. For many people the first thing they do is either pull the fuse for the buzzer, or disable it somehow, usually by cutting a wire or two. Maybe you'll get lucky and it'll be as simple as replacing the fuse.
This is assuming you either 1. just bought the truck or 2. Have owned the truck since new, and read/heard something about how the truck "should" buzz.
I've got an XLT. I think my chime..er is broken or something. My ignition cylindar is also shot. It could be a combo, of course, when my door's open, it still doesn't do anything. I'm not terribly interested in fixing either of them.
