My 1992 aerostar has recently began showing a blinking airbag light on my dash. It is blinking a code 32 from what I gather. It blinks 3 times...pauses then 2 more. Then repeats.
Can anyone tell me what that code may mean and how I can go about fixing it?
I had the same probem with my 93 twice. The most likely cause is an open copperpath in the clockspring inside the steering column. The clockspring is a long wound flat wire that sits below you steering wheel. It is loosely wound inside to allow the steering wheel to turn to and fro. You may also notice that the horn and cruise control will also quit working if it gets bad enough. It is about $100 new. Be careful when removing the air bag. Disconnect the battery and allow 10-15 mins before you work on it. You will also need a steering wheel puller to get to the clockspring.
I just finished fixing this on my van. After tearing everything apart I found that it was just a bad connection in one of the two connections under the dash. There are two groups of wires that come form the steering wheel and connect under the dash up against the steering colum. Take them apart and reconnect them. Maybe you will get lucky.
I will have to try the connector deal as mine does this two. There was also a recal on that spring in the collom and If you ever susspect it is bad call Ford and see if it was ever done on your van as many of the people here have bought their's used and may not know of this recall.
You also might check the wiring harness under the driver's seat. Apparently, they're finnicky. I have a CD change "sitting" under the driver's seat in my '93 AWD. If/when it "shifts" up against that connector, the Airbag warning lights starts complaining. Jiggling the connector shuts it up the next time I "reboot" the van. One of these days, I'll replace the harness.
Sorry to revive such an old subject, but after jiggling the wires and reconnecting them, I replaced the clockspring. Everything works great except the airbag light is stil blinking!! Now it has a new flash pattern of 32. Can anyone tell me what this might mean? I would also like to know if there is any way to just remove the airbag and still use the steering wheel cover. Then I could just pull the lamp from behind the airbag idiot light spot.
