I would like to find a good used F250 Super cab with the 7.3 for $10,000. I was seriously considering this swap last spring when gas jumped up and diesel stayed .30 lower. The closest 7.3 I could find with the Man. trans was a 2001 in Blair NE for $21000. They offered $7000 trade for my 99 F150. that is $14,000 to boot and I could have some one else do the swap for $10,000. I do not personally need the 3/4 ton truck + the 7.3 would get 17-20 mpg vs 25-30 mpg for my F150 and the 3.9 L cummins.
That $2000 car will not pull my camper or boat and will not hold my family of 5, 2 of witch are in bulky car seats.
If Ford would have built the F150 in 2003 like they said with the 4.5 L V6 diesel, I would own one right now.
Yes, but that car could be used when you don't pull that camper, and as a commuter.
*shrugs*
I guess I don't feel that the I4 cummins is all that great of a motor...sure, it would get your truck around, but I'd bet that it would be a real dog over 50 mph, even not pulling a trailer.....of course this could be changed with a 8 or 10 spd tranny.
I just don't see enough HP, sure, its got great torque, but you'd need a pretty gear diverse tranny to make it halfways streetable, IMO.
Not to mention if this was a truely viable option, Ford would have done this by now, as they have always wanted a way to up the mpg of its fleet due to CAFE.
Really, if Ford would/could put in a I4 diesel into a F150 that was streetable and got good economy, I'd bet that they couldn't keep the lots filled.

Ford gave up on the diesel in the under 8600 lbs gross weight due to emmissions regs. The same reason GM does not sell a diesel in half ton trucks any more. After 2007 when the sulfer is to be mostly removed Ford will again try to offer a diesel in a light duty truck. Yes there is a great demand for a diesel in a light duty truck. I guess I am much more conservitive in nature than your self in that I want what ever I drive to be as effecient as possible and a I4 diesel works very well in these applications with a 5 or 6 speed man. trans. They have just as broad a power band as the I6 Cummins and they are most offten seen with a four speed auto.
I see you are in SD too. what part of the state? I am east river.

I agree with wanting every thing to be efficient as possible, but there comes a point when the amount of money spent on said project has a ROI of several years instead of a couple of months, and therefore raises the question "Is this really cost effective?".
As an Engineer, I can assure you I am a efficiency freak, but I have to look at more than just the effciency alone.
I am currently living in Rapid City, but grew up in Hamlin County.
I agree with the ROI, that is why I have not done the conversion yet. Jeff in the new buyer forum said Ford plans on introducing the diesel F150 in 2007, I plan on waitint till then to buy or swap. I could justify the swap now if I look at the cost of a super duty diesel VS my paid for truck and the diesel, plus my V6 5 speed combo would bring about $1000 here in Sioux Falls.

I hear you on that.
I sure would like to have a diesel 1/2 ton that got 20+ mpg. Hopefully my rig will last that long.
Since I did start this thread I guess I better end. The truck is being sold and I have a 2002 4X4 Ext cab PSD lined up to buy next week. Cant wait to get this one up in the air and going faster. Thanks for all the help.
