You guys have a great site and I use it frequently to get information about my truck. It is a 77 f-250 ranger with a 460/c6 in it. It appears right now my crank pully is out of round, or looks like it wobles when running. The engine sounds good and there isn't any lack of power. Could the pully itself have a problem or is it a damper problem (or worse yet, a bad crank)? The biggest problem with it right now is I can't get the alternator belt tight so I squeak a lot around 40-50 mph. Thanks
Look real close at the harmonic balancer, it has a type of rubber holding the outside ring to the hub, if this is worn, not uncommon, it is time for a new balancer. That is all that can go wrong with it. The pulley has 4 bolt's that retain it to the hub of the harmonic balancer.
Make sure the center bolt that goes into the crankshaft is tight on the balancer, I have seen a few of them loosen up or even fall out, allowing the balancer to come off the end of the crank shaft, and go right through the radiator. The bolt on one of mine had come loose once, just removed it applied some blue loctite and torqued to spec. Have had no further problems. -Ed
Does anyone know how to get the crankshaft bolt off? I have seen a couple people suggest using the starter. Is this safe? If not, how do I get the engine to stop turning?
I've taken care of this problem. Of course you were correct with the harmonic balancer. I replaced it with a fluid balancer, it now works great. FYI- I tried the trick with the using the starter to loosen the crank bolt, I couldn't get an impact wrench into the spot I needed to, and it worked. It was super easy. No more wobble, no more noise out of the alternator. Now on to the next problem.
