Reverse lights only work when shifting from Drive

My reverse lights are weird and they only come on if I shift from anything to the right of reverse. ie; if I shift to reverse from neutral, drive, etc. If I am shifting from Park into reverse they never turn on. They never worked at all until I replaced my MLPS a few months ago and that made them start working. Any ideas what causes this? Thanks.

Try replacing your neutral safety switch. that should do the trick for you.

MLPS is the same thing as a neutral safety switch. That is what I replaced to cause them to start working.

If the column gear indicator line doesn't line up with gear you are in, that could throw of the reverse switch in the column. Easy to adjust by loosening the shift linkage underneath and lining the arrow up with the gear it was supposed to be in.

The arrow does line up correctly.

I don't know if it is related, but sometimes it will act like it is not in park when I try to start my truck. I sometimes have to slam the gear shifter into park a little harder to get it to try to start.

since you already replaced the MLPS my guess would be that the linkage is out of adjustment.

Would adjusting that be detailed in the Haynes manual? I wouldn't even know where to look for that. Thanks.
