My 98 Ranger 2wd started squeaking in the front end a few days ago. A friend recommended I spray some WD 40 on the control arm bushings but it did not stop the squeaking. Does anyone have any ideas.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 01-13-03 AT 08:40 PM (EST)]As someone here once told me "squeaks, rattles and noises are sooo much fun to try to find" ...
They can be, and often are, very difficult to diagnose. There are many, many possibilities - for instance - I recently had an awful windshield "howling-buzz" - came to find it by chance after adjusting the air-pressure in my tires - the tires had just worn into a groove, and to the point where they were causing a vibration that manifested in the windshield area (?!). - Who knew?!
Anyway - from my understanding, WD-40 "MAY" eliminate bushing noise -but I don't believe it's good for the bushing, or the rubber it's made of, rather, the bushing assembly, at best you would just be "masking", or "band-aiding" a problem. - How many miles on your `98?
WD-40, like duct tape, has a 1001 uses. But on rubber bushings you need to use a silicon lubricant. Have your buddy jump on the bumper and rock the truck while you try to narrow down where it's coming from.
Thanks for the tip. There are only 55000 miles on the truck. Like my old '87, until now I have never heard a peep out of it. I'll try the silicon spray and see what happens.

kjkellow: I had a squeaking noise coming from the front end of my 2001 Ranger. I used sillicone spray everywhere to no avail. It turned out that I had a bad upper ball joint. Replaced and now riding quietly.
My truck sounds like a squeaky old metal bed. I will try the silicon and if not check the ball joints. I was also thinking that that maybe a few minutes with the grease gun might help. Either that or just slap a "If this truck's a rockin'..." sticker on it.
