Removing the #4 cylinder exhaust pushrod

I didn't post this in the 335 forum because this has to be specific to the 76-79's with the 351M...

I've recently had my 351M rebuilt and now am having a problem with some of the "hardened" Comp Cams pushrods mushrooming under the FMS Roller Rockers. This is the second one in as many weeks to do this. Tonights pushrod happened to be the farthest one back on the passenger side and wouldn't you know it, you can't just pull it out because it hits the A/C box under the hood!

Before I go and start jacking the motor up or pulling the A/C box out, I'm looking for creative ways to get that pushrod out without a lot of disassembly/assembly time.

Anyone have a nifty trick for this?

BTW, my first thought was to drill a small hole in the bottom of the A/C box so the pushrod can slide up far enough to clear the head and then plug the hole with a small rubber grommet plug. 1/4 or 5/16 hole ought to do it. But I just want to hear other options.

Thanks in advance!

John

Actually because it is an engine question the 335 series engine forum is the correct place.

Just because it involves an 73-79 truck doesn't mean it goes that forum

I posted it in the 73-79 forum because ONLY the people with a 76-79 will have this problem. I should have just said I had a "V8" and then it wouldn't have been moved...

It is more of a "I want to be creative with everything but the engine" question

(sigh)

regardless of where we are in the forum, i came up with the same idea before i finished reading your post to find that you already thought of it. if you can visualize where the evaporator is inside the housing and drilling your hole will not chance damaging it, i'd say the idea is a go. prolly less work than loosening the trans mount, linkage, both engine mounts, maybe the exhaust and who knows what else to jack the engine on its' side and still maybe not be able to get it out?

Many of us thet run these engines are very familiar with your model truck.

You may need a larger hole. You can seal it with aluminum tape also.

I hate that ugly "growth" in the engine compartment...
