Hi, I have a 1995 full size Bronco with the 5.8 engine and auto trans. Sometimes when I pull out, I hear and feel a CLUNK. I also notice this noise sometimes when I come to a stop. I have checked the universal joints and found them to be OK. Also, when driving along the highway, I hit the accelerator on and off, thinking that if it was a universal joint, I could duplicate the noise. Not so. I do not get this CLUNK everytime, and sometimes I may pull out and go about ten feet or more before I hear this noise. Any suggestions ? Thanks in advance, Mike
i think a major recalshould be put under way for all broncos regardless of year. i have only met like 3 people who have put new trannys in and redone their gears that dont have that damn clunk. so imgonna try greasing my slipjoint too and see what happens.
I got it too. Go to the 87-96 truck forum and do a search for clunk. You'll get hundreds of hits. It's so common, and frustrating because it can be so many things.
mine does the same thing i was sitting at a light once and it bogged down four a few seconds when i acelerated and then klunck whent into gear. or when i put it into reverse only somtimes.
That "clunk" is caused by the rear driveshaft slip-spline sticking, then letting go when the forces get too high, and the axle unwraps.
Lubing the slip-spline will fix it; some driveshafts, depending on the year, have the zerk fitting at the wrong end, so the grease runs out before the spline is lubed properly.
The way to fix it once you have the "clunk" is to get under there, disconnect the rear of the driveshaft - but first block your wheels os the truck won't roll away! - and fully extend the shaft so you can see as much of the spline area as possible. Clean the splines and grease 'em by hand - thoroughly.
I checked the rear slip joint as suggested by Stroud and Redbob. There was no grease fitting at all, so I disconnected the unit at the carrier. I pulled the slip joint apart and greased it by hand. I believe that was the problem. I have used the Bronco a few times today, and I haven't the clunk yet. many thanks for all the suggestions !! Mike
