Im thinking of purchasing a 1997 f-250 Powerstroke....the truck is emaculent but im kinda leary about the milage....190K.....the guy wants $10K ive done the car fax to see the history of the truck...only 1 owner and registered only in AZ and NV. ive drove the truck many times and everything seems mechanically sound...(ive grown up around and had many modified small blocks and big blocks so this is a whole new world for me). Any advise would be greatly appriciated. Thanks
Last diesel I owned had 160 k on it when I bought it and 390 when I sold it. You should be able to get some high mileage out of it. I would imagine someone on this great site will be able to give you some numbers on what they currently are driving.
From my experience, I wouldn't be overly concerned.
I would try to check out the maintenance history and if it is good, then I would say that you should be OK. Parts and pieces here and there will inevitably fail, but with that proper care, the PSD lasts a LONG, LONG time.........
Emblosser, if you have the knowledge that the truck has been maintained well, you've got yourself a great truck!
I've had my '95 since brand new, and it runs like a charm! I have about 90K on it now, and have added alot of "mods" since then.
Remember the stock Powerstroke is a mere shadow of its true capability, as the HP can move up in a hurry with some bolt on modifications!
The biggest hold back of the early Powerstrokes are their rather small injectors, but there are several options to go to get big power out with larger injectors now. Of course all the basics need to be done first, as in getting better air (open air intake) and exhaust (downpipe and larger exhaust), guages, and possible transmission modifications once you get to a specified power level. You obviously will need programming, as in a good chip, where there are several to choose from as well...my choice being a custom flip type chip with several optional settings.
So, all in all, if you take care of 'em, they will take care of you!
