Predator Question

I am unable to search right now so I will post this question on the board. I am looking to buy the diablo predator. I have heard you need aftermarket exhaust to run the highest setting? Is this true? I have an 04 F-250 4wd Fx4 and I do very little to no towing. So if I do not tow anything is it okay to run at the hightest setting?

Kenny

You will need an exhaust kit, and a pyrometer to monitor exhaust temperatures, and to keep from burning up the turbo. This is mandatory for running the Predator in the highest setting.

I concur with the upgraded exhaust - or at least remove the restrictive stock muffler...
but I've been running the predator for about 20K miles and no problems....

Is the pyrometer a difficult install. I saw the set of gauges on motorhavens website, but have been weary of buying them because I don't know exactly how to intall them. Do they come will good detailed instructions?????

jdadamsjr -

Upgraded exhaust to "run" at the highest setting, Understood.

Can you "test" it out just to see the difference before you get the $$$ for the exhaust? or would you recomend against this.

I have a predator on the way, and would love to do a test run, but keep in the 65 hp mode till I get the exhaust (probably spring)

Thanx

Trevor

I think you should be alright just to test the 100 hp mode , but I would HIGHLY recommend running an exhaust temp gauge if your running in any mode .
I'm running the Predator in 65 hp mode and have hit 1135 pre turbo degrees.
I was going up a slight grade and holding the throttle 1/2 to 3/4 .
04 F350 CC LB 3.73 with 315/75/16 , stock exhaust and I was empty.

Hope this helps

IF you don't tow....
that's what I did....
The predator surprised me when it first came out ....
(if you look at post 2 and 13 in the Predator thread... I asked one question and then complained to motorhaven for getting the predator to me too soon ! )

I couldn't wait on the gauges and didn't have the cash for the exhaust at the time...
so I did an inexpensive straight pipe in place of the X muffler and ran the predator for a while like that....

but in the X the straight pipe was TOO much droan on the many long trips we take so I got a turbo back exhaust and the combo has worked flawlessly since 1-14-04 when I got the predator....
9 months and about 20K miles without a hitch....
(and I've not hurt anything - and I drive HARD without towing.... )

At least put in the Pyrometer before you put in the tuner. I added the Pyro and then the tuner and wow did my EGT's jump. I then added the exhaust and it helped bring them back in line. I figure if you are going to soup it up you should at least monitor what you are doing to your motor, at least with a Pyro you can let your foot off BEFORE you burn a turbo or do other damage. It was not too hard to install, took about an hour and a half or so. I like to think you can NEVER have too many guages!

Having the pyrometer is not a bad idea. Again, you will melt pistons before burning up the turbo. That will cost you more than the replacement turbo.
