Down Pipe Q?

Down Pipe Q?
I am going to be putting an exhaust on my truck soon. When I was under there installing my EGT guage I noticed that the factory downpipe has and aluminum type insulation on it. Is this something that I should get from Ford and put on the aftermarket one? Is it needed? Or is this something that I can remove and place on the new down pipe? Thanks

I removed my entire exhaust with out cutting anything. You do not need the insulation.
If your installing the 3.5" down pipe you will have no problems. The 4" pipe requires porting of the welded seam in the cab.
If your installing the 3.5" down pipe you will have no problems. The 4" pipe requires porting of the welded seam in the cab.

I also have the foil wrapping on the downpipe. I think that the early 03's have the wrapping to cover up how mangled the pipe is. IMO.

Insulation is for noise attenuation. That is one of the reasons that people report a higher noise level (whistle) with the aftermarket pipes.

local guy sells Banks exhaust and said only one cut to remove factory exhaust and one cut fittig in the banks was required to install it with a 4" downpipe (no welding). This sound right? he was pushing pretty hard, so maybe that's a line?

I had a trusted shop do mine and thats how they did it.
If there was an easier way(non-cutting) i'm sure they would have done it.
I would like to point out to the original poster that if your going to go through the effort of removing the exhaust from the turbo back then its worth putting the largest diameter d-pipe possible IMO.
For the sake of lowering EGT's as much as possible is what i'm trying to say.
Not sure of costs differnce between 3.5" and 4" but its worth it. More so if you run an aftermarket tuner....

I really believe that the DPPI, MagnaFlow, Banks, Hog, etc are all good and certainly better than stock.
I did the cat back 1st b/c the downpipe were not available yet from Banks.
When i did add the d-pipe i was surprised at the extra "umph" and the sweet whistle sound.
FYI: while the 6.0 d-pipe is better than the older "pancake style" 7.3 it still ain't all that. The bends are not mandrel bent so it is slightly crimped and a little smaller in diameter.
Anyway, you can't go wrong by supporting a FTE sight sponsor.
