rattling 460

Lately, my 460 has been rattling. Its not a rhythmic rattling, it sounds like a few pebbles in a coffee can rolling around. It only happens whenever i'm in third gear and i step on the gas a little, getting the revs to around 2000, and just gets louder the more i step into it without kicking down. We think it my be carbon buildup on one of the valves but i was just wondering if anybody had any experience with this might lend some advice. Thanks.

sounds like your timing is off. check it with a timing light. what year? most of the carbed 460s are around 12 dergrees. if you need to know how to do it, write back i will direct you step by step..

maybe try setting it at 8 or 10 degrees, i know you will lose power but it really sounds like a timing problem ( spark knock). see if this helps. i cant think of anything else like the way you describe it. spark knock usaully occurs under a load like acelerating in top gear. let me know what you find. it could be bad gas... if you think its carbon you could try to decarbon it with some trans fluid or water. the only thing is to go slow puring it in so you dont lock it.

well my dad and i agree that it might be carbon build up on some of the valves so we are just gonna go ahead and recondition the heads. we'll go ahead and try to play with the timing more like you said...thanks for your help man.
