better fuel milage?

Im sure this has been posted before but I cant do a search for some odd reason.

So, how can I get better MPG? Downtown Grand Forks is 15 miles away from base and its all highway, and at 70mph Im close to 2500 RPM's with these 4.10's. And with diesel prices rising I wont be saving much money any more.

I dont want to get rid of the 4.10's cause they are nice at starting take off. I know a chip would help, but will it mess up my torque converter? I dont want to damage my tranny at all, cause those are expensive to replace.

Will a camper top help? Or would a tonnue cover be better?

The camper shells will cost you at least a thousand bucks.. to benefit from that on gas saved would take a really, really, really long time I would go with a chip first, around 300 bucks or so, then the second best thing to do is keep your right foot out of it. But if you get the chip you won't be able to keep your right foot out of it.... sooo... I dunno... get a hybrid escape?

I have an 01 shortbed powerstroke with a hypertech programer and get 20mpg on the performance setting and on towing i still get about 17 or 18. The programer was the best buy ive made in a while, even with replacement buppers front and rear and tool box i can load down my bed and still get 19 its awsome.

Mileage on two identical trucks will vary dramatically. Superchips says their MicroTuner offers the best mileage improvement on the High Performace setting. Ken from MotorHaven (this site's sponsor) indicated that the Diablo Delta chip gets the best mileage on the lower setting. Other factors include the freshness of the oil change, wind speed relative to direction of travel, weight of your right foot... On a recent trip, 600 miles into an oil change, I got 15mpg at 75mph between Shelley ID & Caldwell ID on I84; weight was about 7700#, no wind, cruise control on. For my truck, that's good mileage...

I see. When I drove 1200 miles on a fresh oil change, with 1000 lbs in the back, I still got roughly 18-20 mpg at 70 mph. but now Im getting around 16-18 with no load at 70

The larger tires will register less mileage racked up becuase they will not have to spin as many times as a smaller one per a given distance. When you figure out the MPG you will be using a lower miles number to divide the gallon of fuel into which will in turn show a lower MPG rating.

MPG will look like it is decreasing using larger tires becuase the mileage that is being racked up is less due to less revolutions of the tire in a given distance, when this lower mileage number is used to calculate the MPG (divided by # of gallons of fuel used) it will appear less.

I thought I remember reading that going to 285's actually makes the speedometer more accurate.

My stock My Speedometer was 2 miles per hour slow 67 was actually 65!! After I installed 285s it was 2 MPH Fast 63 was actually 65!! Tested this over 30 miles with a stop watch!! Only real way to do it!!

As far as better fuel mileage!! Take you foot off the fuel!! Slow down!! That's about it!! A Chip or Programme WILL NOT get you Better Fuel mileage!! They are not desigened to do that!! They are designed to put more fuel into the combustion chamber. They do that very well!! I took my programmer out last weekend!! It looks like the larger tires will cut my Fuel mileage about 1 MPG!!

If you want better highway mileage, you may not have much choice but to regear to 3.73, or keep the RPM's under 2000.

While i agree that the best way to increase mileage is to slow down, I would have to disagree on your statement about the chips not helping it. Although their true purpose is to increase horsepower and torque, they CAN help out on your mileage. Unless both my truck and my fathers truck both mysteriously started getting better mileage after installing chips.... The truth about the chips though, to actually see the increase in mileage you must wait several months before comparing numbers. After installation of a chip, even a 50hp chip you will keep your foot into it more. After you have it and are back driving "normal" then you can see an increase.

If you disagree, I would surely like to know how I got better mileage after installing my chip. Seriously.
