Hi, I need some help. My 86 ford van will crank up, but it idles low at lights and shuts off a lot of the time. In addition, the van is running hot after driving for a short period of time. Also, when it rains the van is more likely to shut off. Can anyone give me some ideas about what might need to be fixed. Thanks!
not sure exactly but, removing and cleaning the throttle body/IAC would be a good start.
I did it to mine a while ago and it idles much better now. it is 2-3 hour
job and not too difficult.
Anyone out there have any more advise for me? Today the van stalled out while I was riding down the street. Also, there was a lot of smoking going on. Please help!
It sound to me like either the fuel pressure regulator has taken a dump and taken the oxygen sensor out with it most likely, or the oxygen sensor has gone bad and is throwing a lean condition calling for a full rich..... I'd pull the codes and see what the computer says is going on. 1986 was the first year for EFI in the trucks so good luck...
I have an '87 Ford and the vacuum lines are these wire-thin hard plastic which became brittle over the years wherever heat was present (primarily near the exhaust manifolds) and cracked. Also the vac reservoir (coffee can) was rusted through. The engine ran badly, particularly idle, and died in use.
Get a whole roll of rubber vac tubing and replace EVERYTHING. By now your lines are bad.
