Trouble removing rear drums

I tried to remove the rear drums on theback of my Ranger and the drum would not come off even with trying to beat the drum off with a hammer. There aren't any retaining clips on the studs. The wheel spins freely up on the jack. Any help will be appreciated.

You need to back the adjusters off inside of the brake drums. The adjusters are there to constantly keep the shoes the proper distance from the inside of the drum and adjust in very small increments as the brake wears.

There will be a small access hole on the mounting plate, it might be covered with a rubber plug. You should be able to stick your finger in there and feel a small wheel with little teeth on it. If you try to turn the wheel I think it only goes one way. Don't turn it that way it makes it even harder to get the drums off. You need to find the pin that is spring loaded and catching the 'teeth' and keeping it from turning the way you want it to. Lift that pin off the teeth and turn the adjuster. You will have to turn it quite a bit.

What you are doing is bringing the shoes back in off the inside of the drum and allowing the thicker inside lip of the drum to pass over the shoes.
