cranking voltage

i have a 73 f250 w/ 460 in it and am tracing electrical gremlins. here is my question.

is there an acceptable cranking voltage. when i put the multimeter on the batt at rest it reads 12 volts, when i crank the motor it goes real slow and the multimeter drops to 5-6 volts. earlier in the day when it would start it would drop to 7-8.5 volts, start and charge at 14volts, so i know the alt is working like it should.

i dont think it is a bad starter, since it is brand new( some of you might recognize me from the 460 forum, i have another thread going on in there about the starting problem, but i wondered if this was something seperate.)

also, is there any way i can test for a voltage leak somewhere in the truck, just in case the batt isnt the culprit.

any help you can give me would be great.

thanks in advance.

jamie

From your description, I'd bet on a bad/weak battery. Can you take it in somewhere & have them do a load test on it?
If you think there's something draining the battery, disconnect the - cable. Use a test light between the - battery post & the - cable. Make sure that everything in the truck is turned off & the doors are closed. If the test light lights up, then you do have a drain.
