is there any differences in 460 blocks from 1995 to 1972??? i know that pre 72 the deck is bigger but what about c6 bolt patterns etc for the 95.
any help strongly appreciated
thanks
AS I understand it the EFI models, starting around '86/87 - 97, have a different intake port arrangement, but I believe that this only affects the intake and heads. Not sure if the block has different dimentions, mounting surfaces, or what not. The easy way to see would be check the casting number under the right side (passenger) head, the number will be something like this: D9TE-AB. This number is of my '79 460 block, block revisions made in the 80's will have a "E" designator as the first character, then the year within the decade, as the second, e.g. D9 = 1979, E5 = 1985 if you have one that is D9 or maybe E3 it is probaly compatable with older style heads and intakes. When I was looking for a "donor" motor I was told to look for '85 and older vehicles... the really sweet block is rumored to be a D8TE-, reports are that it's a 4-bolt "truck" block with thicker cylinder walls, so boring to .080 and beyond can be achieved. Which reminds me, the D1VE block found on '71 later "land yachts" probably has thicker cylindar walls also, but is harder to find in a 4-bolt, I think you have to look for a C9VE block if you want the 4bolt, but not really sure of that...
As I understand it ALL 385 serise blocks have the same bell housing bolt pattern, which bolted to a C6 for older models and an E4OD for '88 and newer models. For What it's worth: I'm looking into putting an E4OD in my '79 and all the inquires I've made no one has asked me I have a pre or post' 85 block, just weather or not its a 460, 351M/400, or 351W/C....
Also, I believe that, and the other guys can correct me if I wrong, the 'Pre '72 blocks have a SHORTER deck height, 10.300" (I think) vs. the later 10.322"
