I recently purchased a 1984 Bronco II, 156,000 miles on it, engine runs fine and all, but the transmission is a bit...bad.
I have to start it in neutral initially and takes awhile to crank over. Once I get it to start, I need to wait a few seconds before I can drop it into First, Second, or Drive. If I do not let it warm-up, it acts as if it is in neutral. Once I drive it around for awhile, I can start it right up in Park (however, last night, it made this grinding sound when I dropped it into Park and it kept rolling).
So, two questions: where can I get a good re-built transmission and what should I expect to pay for a quality job as far as installation?
Second questions: I'm guessing the transmission fluid needs to warm-up or something. Can I just drop it into Reverse and sit there, or do I need to actually move to warm it up?
I can start mine right up and put it in gear and go. Is yours low on fluid? Maybe the pump don't have enough fluid in it to get things going..that's a possibility. I had the transmission rebuilt in my broncoII. Had them use better parts for a good rebuild. Cost me $1000 to have it done..mine is automatic. It now has about 3,000 miles on it and about 1,000 of them are offroading miles over the past 2yrs.
Alright...so I took it to the transmission shop: they said with the problems I'm having, it's definatly busted up, or burned. The fluid is brown and it smeels burnt anyway...
So...what do you guys think?
Edit- The guy said that if I replace the tranny fluid, I could make it worse...?
sounds like the damage is done but i would change the fluid and the filter i have had three auto trannies with clogged filters that did the same thing changed filter fixed em..... cheap
Changed out the fluid and filter, the problem seems to have lessened in severeity, maybe a 2-3 minute warm-up usually.
Another note: the linkage has a lot of side-to-side play, I'm thinking that since it won't drop right into D, 1, and 2, the linkage might be a problem?
glad it helped you might try some the snake oils for the tranny at auto zone and tighten her up a bit more..looks like you bought some time i would keep in mind your tranny is prolly on its way out, start looking for a cheap replacement.( things seem to get real expensive if you have to have it today!!! check ebay and all your local you pull its)
linkage can cause a lot of problems .
im not familiar with the auto tranny in B2 so i dont know if there is an adjustment or if there is a bushing that is wore... i had a bushing on my b2s transfer case manual shifter that wore out that made my rig not go into anything but 4WLOW like a $2 part
Convert it to a four or five speed.Auto trannies don't belong on such a small engine. If you find a donor truck w/clutch pedal assy, crossmembers and all the junkyou oughta be fine.Manuals are cheaper to aquire, sturdier and give more oomph and mileage. But thats just what I think
