I've got a 90 Bronco (EFI, 5.8L) That is hesitating & "popping"/backfiring at low speeds. It has no low end torque or power, and hesitates when trying to start out, then picks up some power later. This only happens when in gear (auto trans) - when it's in neutral, it revs without a problem. I've been thinking fuel filter, but am not sure - any suggestions?
Ok, I just had the fuel filter changed, as well as moved the spark plug wires for 7 & 8 so that they weren't crossing, and it runs about 30% better, but it's still "starving" (popping, no real power) for gas when you step on it. The garage did say that the fuel pump itself may be going - it wouldn't start until they gave it a smack. Does it sound probable? Anything else it could be? A new fuel pump is $300 CDN + $150 CDN labour.
the fuel pump you can do yourself. do a search there are a lot of people that have replaced there own. i need to because my gauge doesnt work. the pump could be a good portion of the problem.
It's kind of wierd now - if you apply very light gas, it will pick up at it's own pace - press down even moderately and it sputters, or does nothing, then takes off. Very strange!!
Have you tried fuel injector cleaner in the gas? I've seen that stuff work miracles on a vehicle with dirty injectors. I have found that the best one is STP concentrated fuel injector cleaner, in a black container. It's not one of the high dollar ones - it is about $3 US. I would put in more than is called for the first time, if you have never done this before. I once had a Cavalier wagon (yeah I know) and that thing would not idle at all, I ran two bottles of the STP in it and it idled like new within one day.
Well, I spent some time in the engine compartment last night, and gave the relays a smack - would you believe that it's driving better now? The fuel pump still whines a bit, but there's more power, so I'm going to try the STP and see if that cleans it up. Somehow I lost the rear ABS when I was playing with the relays. Any ideas?
Mine was sputtering and backfiring like that when I had a cracked spark plug and also once when I had the plug wires on incorrectly. May check your wires just in case. I spotted the cracked plug by looking at the engine running at night and could see the plug arcing to the block.
