Advice please, Stumped.....again!

Need advice (help) from the masses if you would, have a 92' Ranger 2WD Ext, cab, 2.3L, 5Spd, 138K... have a pesky check engine light that glows about 15 minutes into the drive, I am figuring about the time the thermo is opened all the way. Anyway I Work at a Honda garage and used the shops scanner on my truck, no codes either hard or soft and it showed all systems were closed loop, or operating normally..now all this testing was done while the check engine light was on......?? So I cleared the memory just in case, but the light reappeared a few minutes after.
The only hint I have something is wrong is it stumbles real bad once in awhile at idle and it seems to be always on choke mode judging by the gas milage and black soot in the tailpipe. I have tested and changed the thermo twice and the two temp sensors just in case, trying to nail this down.....

Sorry this is so long, would/could someone throw me some advice??
Thanks

The last time I had Black soot coming from my truck, it turned out to be the Mass Air flow sensor. Mine showed up in the codes. Check your connections.

A CEL should always leave a code behind, might try a different code reader.

Or pull the codes with the CEL or meter.
