94 Aero AWD engine removal

Hi everybody..........I took a long trip and purchased a 94 Aero Awd in decent condition. Um, I did a temp fix for the blown head gasket and drove the thing 12,000 miles so far. I realize the temp fix aint gonna last. I pulled a 4.0 engine out of a 93 2wd (thru the front). I was planning on rebuilding that and installing it in my 94 cuz I don't wanna hassle the possiblity of cracked heads on a 210k engine. What I'm unsure about is.........am I going to be able to pull the engine from my 94 AWD thru the front? I'm laughing cuz that's my dream plan. I'm aware what the books say, its just that it wasnt too difficult pulling a 4.0 out of a 2wd aero thru the front. I hate dealing with suspension, so this whiner is lookin for the ease (?) way out. Dynamite is not an option, I've used my quota this year. I like my Aerostar!!! I'm in Lake Tahoe country and snow is not leaving in this millenium. Thanks for the input guys. I did search thru 150 posts, but I'm too tired to search the other 350 posts. Heh, heh

Whatever you did with the 2WD 4.0L will work the same for the AWD 4.0L. There is no difference that I know of. If you pulled one, it should be a piece of cake pulling the other.

Engine removal

T2me2, I've got a similar dilema. I purchased a 93 AWD aerostar off of ebay from Long Island, NY. Grabbed a plane, flew up there, and proceeded to drive it back. Traffic was so bad that I was in Deleware when I realized the transmission was slipping over 50 mph. Didn't have a choice, had to make Florida by noon the next day! Made it to Atlanta, head gasket blew and tranny went out for good. Now, the tranny is no problem, but what steps are in involved in replacing the motor? I can't find any advice anywhere and, being this is going to be my wife's vehicle, I have to do this right! Any advice you could send would be appreciated!

This should help somewhat. I took pictures when I pulled and rebuilt the two 89s I have.

I pulled my 4.0 out the front of my 90 AWD but the van was to be scrapped. It wasn't pretty. If I had to do it again I would drop it out the bottom like the book says. Maybe use the engine crane you would be using anyway to lift the front end off the engine/front susp? With safety being of paramount importance of course

007bronco:

The problem with dropping it through the bottom is having to unhook the brakes and front end. Way easier and faster to pull it through the front. I dropped the transmission, opened the front and had the engine pulled and bolted on the engine stand in less than 7 hours. If I had had help I could of got it out faster.

.......This is a response for Etleto in Atlanta...I hope you are a detail minded person when you pull your 4.0 from the FRONT of your AWD van. Their are soo many things you can damage when removing the engine because its such a tight fit anyway. A few tips I might include would be to remove the engine cooling fan, the air intake (upper half) on the engine, the radiator, the transmission cooler, front grill, and make sure your engine hoist is as close to the engine when you attach it. I mean CLOSE. If u don't do this, it is almost impossible (other than kamakazee removal method) to get clearance from the motor mounts to take the engine out. I'm still driving my 213k AWD with my spare motor looking at me like I abondoned it. I'll rebuild my spare soon, and install. I kinda enjoy having nice clean fingernails when typing on my computer. Hope all goes well Etleto

Actually, the Ford service manual says you can remove the engine through the front. The trick is to remove one of the engine mounts, the driver's side if my memory serves me correctly. I just did that a few months back, really easy, nothing to it.
