Do you mean no heat inside the cab? There is a vacuum operated valve to let the coolant flow thru the heater core. See if the lines are hot. Also see if you have vacuum at the valve.

Yeah, inside the cab Mike. I'll check the hoses. Thanks

What year is it and does this happen regardless of temp setting/function setting?

Its a 2000 Bill and yes regardless of heat settings. I just checked the vacuum on the inlet hose as per Mike's suggestion and it has no vacuum. Do you know if that vacuum is always supposed to be working when the heat controls are on?

Thanks,
Ed

Well, if it has A/C I don't think there should be any vac on the valve in the MAX A/C position. I beleive there should be vac in the other settings (not sure about off), and of course in heat, defrost.

I am looking at my cd manual (which is for an 01), stand by.

Here is a part of the test.
Using the special tool, apply 51 kPa (15 inches-Hg) of vacuum to the heater control valve vacuum line.

l Does the vacuum circuit lose more than 3.37 kPa (1 inch-Hg) of vacuum in one minute?

è Yes

REPAIR or INSTALL a new jumper vacuum harness (19D699), plenum vacuum harness (18C581), or heater control valve vacuum line. TEST the system for normal operation.

The heater control valve vacuum line is part of the recirculation air duct vacuum control motor vacuum circuit.

This is kind of confusing. If you could see the pictures, it would be less so.

Mike, How's that CD manual? Do you recommend it? What's the source?

Thanks for your help,

I'm going to try max AC to see if vacuum comes on, that might shut the valve. What's interesting is that this is an intermittent problem. If I unplug the control box that sits atop the plenum? then the heat works again for that cycle. So this may be that control box.

Thanks
Ed

I like the manual except some of the pictures look like they were drawn in a kindergarden class. I forgot where I got mine. They may be available here on FTE.

They also talk about checking the recirculation air duct vacuum control motor. And if that is ok, to replace the function selector switch.

That vacuum comes on only under max AC setting. I don't know if you saw the post to Bill but this is an intermittent problem that starts to work again after I unplug and plug in the harness from the white box that sits atop the plenum when you view it from the glove box area. Do you know the name of this box?

Thanks
Ed

Hmmmn.....I looked at mine and don't see a white box. I did some more reading. At max/ac the heater control valve is at full vacuum, cutting off water flow. The powertrain control module (PCM) is also shown in the description of the heating system under components. It operates a relay to operate the compressor clutch.

Sounds like his blend door is stuck in the cool air position, there's a link on the fix in the tech info thread.

Thumbs up

Thank you all! Hopefully by next weekend I'll be able to figure it out and do the fix. This is a great resourse. I got this 3liter about 2 weeks ago and love the engine and general layout. It looks like a truck I can work with.

I know this is an old discussion and I might not get a reply but.........
I recently bought a 2000 Ranger with 2.5 engine. When I test drove it, I checked the AC which worked fine, but the heater never did warm up. The dealer had a mechanic check it, he said all he did was pop the hood and tap something and it worked. After I got the truck, the heater did work, but since then has not worked all the time I've tried it. It either works fine, or just blows cold air. Exactly what would he have tapped on and where would it be located? Is it something that is easily and cheaply replaced? Any help is greatly appreciated!
