[QUOTE=malbojah] I'll be there for Daytona Bike Week, but I'll probably skip that and go to the Deal's Gap as long as the weather is good.

Yeah, but after this months issue of Motorcyclist, I can't decide between the Gap and the Barber Vintage Motorsports Musuem near Birmingham, AL. Decision...decisions
If you look up your trucks specs you will find that your truck can tow more then 2000lbs. You need to install a class III hitch in order to tow more weight. The standard bumper hitch is only rated for 2000lbs. If you drive at 60-65 miles an hour, you shouldn't have much problem towing 4000lbs. Your trailer having over 3000lbs payload needs brakes installed. Championtrailerparts.com has surge brake kits if you don't have brakes already installed. An external engine oil cooler would be a plus to keep the heat down. The only place you will have problems is up where you live if you have hills to climb. If you stay on the interstate it is a pretty flat run down the east coast. Take your time when accelerating and braking. If you remove your tailgate and install a cargo web it will cut down on the bed drag
99 f150,
Where is your bumper stamped? The guy at the hitch place told me I had to go with the frame mounted receiver. I have a 2001 ext cab shortbed 4.2 /auto, 3.55ls rear, w/trailer package I bought used.
Stamped on the left of where the hitch ball goes. If you look under the truck you will see it is securely tied to the frame. Rated by Ford as class III
I already have a class III hitch installed (thank god, the ball the is on the bamper is rusted on). The trailer is actually only rated at 2990lbs GVWR (?). I'm now comtemplating a suspension upgrade: adding more leaf springs or an adjustable air-bags setup (I'm leaning towards the air-bags)
my bumper is also stamped rated for 5000 lbs with 500 lb tongue weight. It's stamped on the plastic step guard right above the hole where the ball would mount.
Malbojah,
I just had the 4.56's installed today and have a fresh new set of 4.10's if you want them when you come down. The 4.56's with the 35" tires is just the perfect set up.
BTW, I towed a 3000 lb trailer and forgot to shut my O/D off and threw an transmission overheat code, and I even have a tranny cooler installed along with my tow package from UHaul.

Tom
Uhaul....that why you threw the overheat code.....worthless junk
I didn't see any stamp on the black plastic cover. The bumper looks like the Ford stock bumper though. There is a flat bar under the trucks bumper that beefs up the bumper where the ball is and is tied into the end of the frame along with the bumper.
The boat and trailer combined runs around 3400 pounds plus fuel and gear and I'm up around 4000. The trailer is rated at 5000lbs.
It is stamped in the cover, not a sticker. Do you have the saftey chain loops under the bumper? Doews the bar under the cover have three ball holes? If so you have the same factory bumper as the est of us and it is rated classIII 5000lbs and 500lbs tongue weight
And HEY, the hidden hitch I got from UHaul is beafy and nice looking. Not all square and sticking out all over the place. The tranny cooler is an aftermarket cooler, not a UHaul cooler. Besides, hitch brand has nothing to do with throwing an overheat code. Your just giving me a hard time, aren't ya'
Nah, not aftermarket but is is color coded and has color coded sheet metal over the actual steel bumper part, so it is probably covering the other 2 holes. Not important though, it's still the same load and tongue rated as stamped in the plastic step. And besides, as manly as I think I am, I can really only handle one hole at a time anyway
One last question: what makes the manual tranny so much weaker than the automatic in terms of towing?? I mean, come on, 2000lbs difference so that the ECU can shift the truck for you???
