I aplogize if this has been discussed before & I also aplogize if this hits to close to home, not trying to stir up bad memories but it also can't be forgotten.
I was living in NC. At the time of the attack I was servicing a bobcat 864 and heard the news on the radio.
I then went into the office & told my bossman of what had happened. He did quite believe me because of the radio station I listened to had a reputation of making storys (Howard Stern was on).
I told him if it indeed happen it would definatly be on TV. We turned the TV on and saw the second plane hit.
We sat the rest of the day in front of the TV in misbelief. My work didn't get done that day. 4 days later Amber was born.
And just think, 6 months prior to that I gave up my position as shift supervisor at the company I worked for at Charlotte/Douglas International Airport so I can work more banker hours.
I'm sure it has been discussed a few times in the last three years, but I think it is worth repeating, lest we forget. (don't people still talk about what they were doing the day JFK got shot?)
I was out west, so I was still asleep when the first plane hit. My wife woke me up and told me about it and my first thought was, "terrorist attack." Strange thing was, only a few days prior to it, I was in an anti-terrorist class. The instructor was well versed in the way these animals work. He told us it was going to happen, just a matter of time...
I was a freshman at Malone College in Canton, Ohio. I had an 8am class and then a 9am right after it. I went to my first class(which didnt happen much that year) and went to my second one. As I was sitting there waiting for the prof to show up(she was late) a couple guys I played football with came in and said a plane had hit the WTC, and my first thought was wow, what a dumb mistake, "didnt they know they were there" etc, I said to myself. Then another kid I know came in real late to that class and was like, another plane hit them. And it still never sunk in that someone did it on purpose(call it nieve or whatever youd like). So after class, I hurried back to my room and everyone was watching the news in the dorm, and I couldnt believe what I was seeing. Classes were cancelled the rest of the day. But we still had football practice that evening. It was nice to have practice cause we could forget about that stuff for a little bit, but there's an airport somewhat close by and a few planes flew over that practice and it was very weird, cause everyone stopped and watched them till they were out of sight. That night I called my folks, and told em I loved them(I do all the time, but this time it meant more). Just a bad day that I hope we never see again.
i was sitting in my class A school for avionics technicians in pensacola florida. as soon as it happened the base went to complete lockdown and i thought our whole class would be sent to the boat to chock and chain airplanes for the fleet. i didnt care what i was doing, as long as i was helping....same mentality that i have now.
I had just started to update the security system at Government building in Montana. Being a Government place, they kicked us out of the building along with all the employees. I listen to the news on the way back to my shop. I thought that this will not effect me because I didn't know anybody. But my prayers went out to all right away. Then it hit home on Nov 6, 2003. I got a call from my older brother at work. We live in different states, so he never called me at work. This time he did. I knew what it was and he told me. My nephew was killed in Iraq by a IAD. 21 years old. He had just been home for his 2 week visit. I guess that makes us a little lucky. He got to go to a Neb Corn Huskers game and was on the big screen TV at the game. This next month is going to be hard. Nov 11th is my older brothers b-day. I don't know what to do.
I had just started my 24hr shift working EMS. We were picking up breakfast when I heard it on a radio station. I was shocked.....we hurried back and watched it on TV most of the day.
That afternoon I realized I was on a list, and I didnt want called, and I wasnt, and I'm glad.
my first thought was wow, what a dumb mistake, "didnt they know they were there" etc, I said to myself. Then another kid I know came in real late to that class and was like, another plane hit them. And it still never sunk in that someone did it on purpose(call it nieve or whatever youd like).
I thought the same way. Terrorists were far from my first thought. I was thinking that some ATC attendant had a little to much to drink & then I remembered that Y2K bug & it is quite possible it had a delayed effect & now all the planes are going to fall out of the sky.
Howard Stern immediatly assumed terrorists. He vulgarly said that while it was happening.
I was just laying down for my day's sleep ( I was working 3rd shift at the time),and was listening to the radio when I heard about the 1st plane. always being the suspiciuos frame of mind,my 1st thought was terrorists before the second one hit. I went upstairs and turned the tv on to get better info. Then I got extremely ****ed and almost re-enlisted cause my country was under attack and I wanted to serve like I did in the 1st gulf war. Now i am wishing I would have, cause my ex filed for divorce the week after....I would have lots rather been going after the bad guys than being made to look like one in court during the divorce proceedings ...I will NEVER forget that day or what I was doing at the time the 1st plane hit
I was in history class, junior year of H.S. I wasn't even paying attention when it was on TV...didn't think it was anything that serious. Then I turned around and at that moment the second plane hit. All I could think was hoooooly sh (u can finish). We didn't do a single thing in any class after that except watch it all unfold. But as many of you have said, I didn't expect terrorism at all. It's one of those moments noone will ever forget, and you will always recall exactly what you were doing, like the Challenger explosion, Kennedy's assasination, or Pearl Harbor.
I was walking along to history class for 1st period, and I saw all these kids sort of huddled around radios and such. I tried to listen in but couldn't too well... When I got to class, my best friend came up to me and told me what had happened... the rest of the day I did the best I could to either watch it on TV or listen to it on the radio.
After 9/11, I really got into talk radio, and started listening to it nonstop... it was always good to have it for the 45 minute drive to and from school each day... sorta like ammunition to use in my classes when everyone gangs up on conservatives... Woops, getting a little carried away.
I remember being so angry after that, and thinking day and night about protecting myself and how we could protect our country, but not knowing all the answers... Talk radio helped there.
I'll never forget the look on my friend's face when he told me what had happened - he walked through the door looking like he'd seen a ghost, sort of pale, and eyes real wide. I can only wish it had never happened, but it did, and all we can do now is crush the animals that did it.... if only we can find the will power.
i was heading to london Kentucky when all this was happening on the radio. then they said something about all the buried nerve gas thats in richmond Ky in underground storage. me and my buddy happen to lookup and we just entered richmond.
Unfortunalty *spelling sorry* i was a recovery specialist at the time *was out repo'n peoples cars/trucks/suvs/4wheelers/motorcycles*
we stopped at the truck stop in london and watched it all on tv. then went back home. everyone was freaking out over the nerve gas if they was gonna try hitting it.
Since it was 6 in the morning here in Arizona, I was getting ready to go to work. I just got out of the shower and they stated that a plane crashed into the 1st tower. I was thinking OK, must have been a very bad weather day and there was a navigational error on a plane or it was a small plane. When they showed it was a clear day, I was perplexed. As I was putting on my socks the second plane hit and I went and got my wife. I at first thought is was a movie that I was watching, but alas it was the truth.
I then proceeded to work where I am a science teacher. We have TV’s in our rooms as well as cable. I tried to teach the lesson, but it seemed that everyone was somewhere else and I could not focus, so I turned on the TV and we watched and discussed what happened. That was also when I found out that a plane chrashed into the Pentegon.
I was Driving hauling a load from Tenn to Texas When I heard it on the radio I had to stop and watch it on Tv I didnt get to watch it long but I saw a enough till I was able to stop for the nite and catch up on the days events Still cant believe it thoug h
I don't know about other areas, but word was spreading around our area that gas prices were going to hit $5 a gallon a day or 2 after 9/11. Gas stations were lined up for blocks in my town.
I was doing renovation inspections for my brother in law back then, and his secretary had scheduled me to drive through Manhatten that morning en-route to Brooklyn.
I had asked her once before not to schedule me for New York anymore (I hate driving in the city), so I called my brother in law the night before and he switched with me, and was sending me to Morristown, N.J.
I was on the road heading for Morristown the morning of 9/11, when my wife called me. She said that a plane had just hit one of the Twin Towers. My first thought was an accident involving a small plane. While she was still on the phone with me and watching the news, the second plane hit. I knew then it was no accident!
I tried to get through to my brother in law, but his cell phone wasn't working. I found out later he was stuck in traffic on the George Washinton bridge. I made it to the jobsite, when I got another call about the plane hitting the pentagon. I did the inspection, and headed right for home. Then I heard of the crash in PA., and I remember the helpless feeling of "OMG, what's next?" We pulled the kids out of school. Total shock quickly turned to anger!
