I have a 1993 Bronco 5.8 with a complete bassani system including headers. I just had to cut out some of my system and put a cat. in to pass state inspection.I heard its bad for the engine to run off just headers so i was wondering what else i would need, for example just tubing and how much of it. I dont want to keep the muffler or cat on the system. Where would i find exhaust pipe to make maybe my own system if running off headers is bad for the engine. Thanks
If you try to run just straight pipe, you can get a header flange kit to weld pipe to, but that truck is still going to sound like a logging truck rather than a snertzy done Ford. Why don't you invest in a Flowmaster 40 series with 2.5 inch pipe exiting in front of the wheels. Personally I'd go straight out the back end or at least behind the tires. That would be plenty loud and would still have a good tone to it. I think youcan still get header mufflers that bolt right to the header end, but they make a loud hummmm in the cab.
If you decide to go with just straight pipe off the headers, make sure there's some curve to it so you can have a wee bit of back pressure. Seems to me that without any muffler sysyem it would be just too growly. But to each their own, eh? You can get ehaust pipe from a lot of auto supply stores or even go to a muffler shop and buy tubing from them.
I think you are confusing backpressure with exhaust velocity. Backpressure is a restriction and that is what you are trying to eliminate with an aftermarket exhaust.
