Auto to Standard

I love my 86 Bronco II...except for the auto transmission. I want to put a standard in it, but from what I understand the standards that were used were also pretty bad. Any ideas as to what to put in? Also how much trouble is it to do myself? I have the mitsubishi with auto overdrive in there now, and the elecronic 4wd. I have limited experience so I'm not above having a shop do it, but I need to know what I'm talking about b4 I go

this is very old post so idk if anyon will respond, but its worth the try. Yes you can swap he transmission, my 87 fronco has a 5 spd and its works just fine.
