motor using oil

Hey,does anybody else have this problem?. I have a 2000 x 4x4 with the
v-10 engine,which i like very much.I work the engine pretty hard,but
maintain it every 3000 miles, using Ford oil and filter. It seems to use
about 1 qt between oil changes.I read thru the other threads and some
due and some don't.Just wanting to get a average.
Thanks folks

I have a 2000 4X2 with the V10 and right at 100,000 miles. Still not using any oil between changes. I tow an 8000 pound travel trailer on an fairly regular basis.

Myfather in law has a a 99 F250 with the same V10 as the X. He says he has had the same thing happen to him since he bought the truck new in 99. I don't know if my V 10 X does because I have never changed it myself. I've had free oil change coupons since I got the truck. I'm going to synthetic this week and will be doing it myself. So I'll let you know when I change it this week.

Hope this helps.

I have a 2000 ex 5.4 and i too service about every 3,000 miles...i have gone to 6,000 a time or two and everytime I am told its a quart low. I haul my horses so i thought it was that. But I have even had this happen twice....i have had the oil change and then at about 3,000-5,000 my oil pressure drops and there is little oil yet everything is tight and in place. I am glad to know I am not alone.

I don't know if the problem extends to the V-10s, but I've seen/heard of a lot of 4.6 and 5.4s getting new valve seals after a relatively short period of time. How does the exhaust look when you first start it cold? A little puff of blue smoke is a good sign that the seals are shot.

Generally speaking, I'd say that a quart every 3000 miles would be within spec and nothing to worry about, unless it's a brand-new engine. Just keep a sharp eye on the oil level...if it starts dropping a lot, then you KNOW you have a seal/gasket/piston ring problem somewhere!

Happy motoring...
Pat

You should feel lucky, my ex's v-10 just stared to drink alot of oil. I go through about a quart a week. I do about 800-1000 miles aweek. No leaks, no puffs of blue smoke at start up. Does get a little bearing rap at start-up. But goes away real quick, maybe a second. I drive and work it hard(so can't complain). Always been feed Mobile1 oil and only has 58k on it, thank god for the extended warranty. Always changed the oil faithfullt at 7000 miles, but change the filter at 3500 miles. Will be going in to see the doctor next week so.

Do you change your own oil or have someone do it? They might not be adding enough oil. just a thought.

also, if you have it done at a dealer, they use 5W-20. only use 5W-30

I've noticed that 6 quarts doesn't really fill the V10. Another 1/2 quart of oil is appropriate. Then you will not notice the oil consumption so much.

In the old days there were big blocks that used oil down to a specific level and that was it. I think the 6.8 V10 shares this characteristic. I add - it burns down to minimum and stays there.

Excursion Val Des

I have been on this forum before. I thought I would have sold my 00 Excursion by now but it looks like it is here to stay. I now have 93,000 miles on my 00MY, V-10, 4x4, Limited. I have been using Mobil-1 since 45,000 miles when I bought it. I do the L.O.F. and tire rotation every 6-7K miles.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comfficeffice" /><o></o>

<o></o>

I have also noticed a little blue exhaust at start up, oil burning smell, a noise that sounds like a lifter tick when cold and I now add a quart of oil every 1,500 miles or so. It's not leaking oil either. It's just a daily driver and I don't even have a trailer to pull.<o></o>

<o></o>

I have been told that 1 qt oil/mile is still acceptable.<o></o>

Thanx, KO.

That's an interesting observation. I always try to maintain the max fill mark with out going over. Although, just lately I have neglected to check the level and it drops below the min mark.
