Question Dual Exhaust!!!!

I own a 1995 F-150 with automatic and a 302 (mass air) motor. I live in florida and have visited 4 muffler shops trying to get a true dual exhaust and they say they will only do from the converter back. Will that type of system increase performance or is it a waste of money. Why can't they go from the stock manifold back and just run 2 catalytic converters. Is there a way I could get a true dual exhaust system for my truck.... Thank you for your help on this matter.......

If I'm not mistaken it is a federal offense punishable by a huge fine ($2500) to remove a working cat.

Most muffler shops don't want the hassle of people failing inspection for emissions then coming back to them screaming they screwed up, when they complied with your request in the first place. "You" being the general public, not necessarily you personally.

Anyway, dual exhaust is very doable, as long as you don't have a side-mounted gas tank which the dual-tank trucks do. If you have a rear-only tank, its a piece of cake.

Another option is to keep the single exhaust, but make everything a larger diameter, from the exhaust ports all the way back.

Cool, actually all I'd need to know is where you routed the driver side exhaust tube... cat or not... outside the frame rail, inside, etc. Just curious of the route you took.

I'm still going with a huge-*** single exhaust to make my life easier, but I'm curious, if you don't mind.

95 true duals

I just did my TRUE DUALS in august on my 95dual tank Flare side F 150. I also have a 302 4x4. What I did was 1st got hedman long tube headers ( not required, but great perfomance boost!) Then my exhaust guy swung the driver's side over in front of the transfer case to meet up with the pass side where he fabbed in an H pipe with a pipe nipple to accept my new longer harnessed O2 sensor. then he stood 2 after market cats on there sides & then into 2 sideways mounted flowmasters & on out behind the wheels into 3" stainless tips. It sounds AWESOME! and the day I picked it up I thought WOW! this thing really runs, then I realized 1 of my plug wires was just hangin' there! so it out ran my truck earlier on only 7 cylinders! I'll try to get some pics, but it's hard to see under there with out it being on a rack. I live in PA & it was all tatally legal.

87 351 4X4 Exhaust

My 87 has dual tanks and is a fleetside. Has anyone added a dual exhaust to one of these? If so, what kinda bucks are we talking about?

There are a lot of variables involved. Are you talking true duals or a catback system? Are your current cats good? Do you live in an emissions state?

Lots of people can help you on here, but you need to give us some info on what you have and what you want.

True duals would be very doable on your truck, but it would be expensive. I have an '88 4x4 351 and I had to replace both cats and put on a SIDO flowmaster delta flow 40 and turned the pipes out in front of the passenger wheel with 3" tips. Cost me $515. Searched along time for that quote, all others were over $700.

87 351 4X4 Exhaust

I am in an emissions state (NC). I would like true duals. Truck currently has only one cat and it doesn't look to be in great shape, but did pass the emissions inspection last May. From the looks of things the exhaust system has been modified from original for a long time. I would like to replace everything from manifolds on back. Its a short bed fleetside with a C6 xmission. From reading somewhere in this forum, it sounds like I would like the Flowmaster 40's solution. I need to know what's involved with the conversion and approx. cost. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

All I did was start going to shops and telling them what I wanted. Some looked at me like they had no interest, some looked and gave me outrageous bids, and my local Meineke gave me a great bid and I jumped on it.

True duals will entail two mufflers two cats and the pipe and labor. If you go from the manifolds back you will run into quite a bit of labor.

It will be pricey.

i had no problem getting my true duals put on. they even cut my cat off. i only paid 207 bucks for true duals, cat removed, 18" glasspacks, and 2 1/2" pipes coming out the back. then over the summer i got the back half of my exhaust redone so it comes out the sides with chrome tips and that only cost me 60 bucks, 20 each for the tips. pics are in my gallery.

did you buy the exhaust kit seperately, like online? or did you just go right to the shop to have it done? your setup is exactly what i want but i need to find the cheapest route possible

path of exhaust

Hey
Frederic,

i realize its been like 2 months since you asked..but the path needed for true dual exhaust on a dual tank truk....drivers side loops under the engine/tranny..well in front of the transfer case...then both go down the pass side going through the glasspacks, then the drivers side goes back over near the rear wheel well.....

alberta has no emsiisions so the air pump , cats and whatever else is long gone....sound great deep rubmbleat idel, and what a growl upon acceleration...

now if i could only fix the stalling / erratic idle prob......

Make sure that you run your driver side out the passenger side of the pickup so the pipe lengths are the same. See if you can't get away with no cats... saved me a lot of money...
