Belt Tensioner

I'm pretty new to Explorers and to the serpentine belt system that they use.
I was checking to see why my belt was loose and found that the tensioner seemed to be pushed "over centre".

When I pushed it back, anti-clockwise, it worked for a little while and went over centre and loose again.

Is the tensioner stuffed?

Im pretty sure its gonna be your tensioner, a belt tensioner holds around 100ftlbs of torque, just over time the spring inside becomes worn and will loose its "spring" if you may.lol
just go to autozone or somewhere and get a replacement, they are pretty inexpensive.
hope this helps.

98txexplorer,

It was the tensioner. The two halves of the tensioner body are held together by a sort of press on washer.
There was some slop there allowing the spring to wind its tension out.

For the moment I've held the two halves together tightly with a big washer where the through bolt goes, just until I can get another tensioner.
I works but the tensioner doesn't work automatically.

I'm in Australia so we don't have any Autozones and the Explorer isn't all that common here.
I'll probably be only able to get one from Ford for only slightly less than a full rebuild.

Thanks for your help.
