351W EFI conversion

Hey all, I have a 82 Ford F-150 Explorer truck, big cam, my uncle said it was a 288 lift I think, can't remember what he said but it was something like that or he said a 268 lift. I got a 2 barrel stock aluminum intake with a Holley 2 barrel carb and 10x15 rims all around with regular street tires oh yeah and also true dual exhaust, no overdrive and it has stock ford gears in the rear end, I looked one time but can't remember what ratio it was.

What I'm wanting to do is convert over to EFI. I found a EFI system that will work on my 351. It says it will work on older 351W motor. I think it's a stock EFI system, it's not the square upper intake that goes up and the big square part goes over to the drivers side, this EFI system has the upper intake going over towards the passengers side and has tubes crawling up with the throttle body up front there instead of just a big rectange looking thing sitting up there. Is there anything else that I would need to make this setup work or anything that wouldn't make this work?

How well will it improve my gas mileage with all of the things I have on my Ford?

Also I think I get like 8 or 10 mpg right now. I get different all the time.

I hope someone knows what I'm talking about.

I would also like input too.

The 268 or 288 will be your cam duration, the lift will be in the neighbourhood of .456-.484" (or more). To convert your truck to EFI, you'd also need all the wiring harnesses, the computer, and EFI fuel tanks complete with pumps, in other words, a pretty big project. Also, a stock speed density EFI computer wouldn't work very will with a large cam. The EFI system you describe is the factory EFI setup for truck engines. To change your fuel mileage, you might need to change your rearend gears to better suit the driving style of your truck, ie: does it spend more time on the highway or driving around town?

Hey thanks for the reply, my truck spends time in the city and on the highway, but mosty it's in the city. Now I'm thinking of ditching the EFI and just going to a 4 barrel edelbrock intake and edelbrock 4 barrel carb setup and maybe a 2.81 ring a pinion gear set or maybe a 3.00. If I changed ring and pinion gears wouldn't I have to change axles to because of the splines? I would like to go with the 2.81 gears for the gas mileage, I never pull anything. How much of a gas mileage impovement would I get with the 4 barrel carb setup and 2.81 gears?

If you're doing mostly city driving, go for the 3.00 or even 3.25 gears. I have 2.75 gears in my truck, and it sucks back gas pretty bad in town. I'm running with an Edelbrock 1406 carb on a Performer intake on a stock 88 351W (converted from EFI to carb), and gas mileage is decent if I keep my foot out of it, but I don't have any mpg figures at all.
