351M, setting off car alarms? Haha, . That wouldn't make people happy. Thanks for the info ramboss429 and 351M! I figured an auto takes away from the sound a bit, but it does do a little something if you are going about 35 and drop it into 2nd. Mine sounds like a semi with the second cat off doing this. I've done this a few times because I like the sound, but it's probably not great for the transmission or motor. Also, a small block won't sound like a BB, atleast not a stock 302.

Okay, so with a 460 351M, you'd say cherrybombs were pretty loud if it set off alarms? And ramboss429, you'd say that with cherrybombs it wasn't loud at all, I'm hoping for not very loud. I've got neighbors and just driving something that's super loud isn't great today, it was better in the 60s when almost every car had a little rumble to them. I like loud, but don't want my truck that loud. With straight pipe and cats, way too wussy. Now, with one cat on, that's almost the sound I want. It could be louder, but then I might be pushing it.

So do you guys think I should just forget the cherrybomb and leave the first cat intact and then just weld on the hollowed second one? I was thinking I'd get some popping with the cherrybomb, but seems like with my 302 it's only a glorified muffler.

I'm still wondering what kind of can muffler will be mildly loud and keep any clatter noise the motor makes?????
And that air hose on the cat, do they just slip on, I see some sort of rusty clamp on mine???

Then I could just weld it back on. It's a pain to get to where the hose leads to the pump or I'd just pull it right out attached to the cat.

So, I'm guessing that with open headers, it's louder. If you put in some restrictive piping, say 2.25", the pipe will muffle it a bit? Not much, LOL,

One more thing, my truck doesn't smell right now with the first cat. Will it smell without it on? I don't want to be going down the road and have people smelling the exhaust fumes because I don't like to be behind a stinky truck. I'm guessing again here, but if it's running right then it won't smell much right?

Thanks again, your info helps!

yes a highflow will make a very noticable difference if you replace both cats with one..

I run true duals with 2 glasspacks(one on each pipe) on my 1990 Bronco 5.8. I have no muffler or cat and its never too loud. Sounds great!

My 460 wasn't real loud till I got into the high rpms (3500+) untill they burnt out, then it was fun. Umm, with Dual straight pipes and headers 2.25" is gonna be LOUD. Replace the cats with one Hi Flow and try a bunch of different cheap mufflers, On a single system a glasspack will be fairly quiet if you go with the stock pipe size of the truck, I know of a Dodge 360 with a DI/SO 16" glasspack on backwards to make SI/DO, so it does almost nothing for muffling and that truck isn't that loud, the cat is gutted etc. He has Single 2.5" in and dual 2.25" out, sounds pretty much the same as any flowmaster I have ever heard. Just remember that everyone has different ideas of what is loud and what sounds good but to me, too loud is either when the truck is so loud inside that you can't hear the stereo or when the cops are looking for you every morning on the way to work.

To answer the cat converter question, they first appeared on most 1/2 ton trucks in 1979, and 3/4 and 1 ton trucks in 1980. My dad had a 1978 Chevy half ton and my uncle a 1979 Chevy 3/4 ton and they both came from the factory without cats.

They're kinda the same...but I see glasspacks and mufflers as two different classes personally.

Anyone know of anyone getting in trouble for gutting out cats or removing them? Do they take this stuff seriously? Yeah, proabably in the US right. They'll put a guy in jail for making his truck pollute a little more, but can't do enough about the psychos that we have to put up with everyday.

It's a federal law, and there's a huge fine if you get caught, I got pulled over about a month ago for several things but no muffler was one of them, I didn't tell him about the gutted cat though, if I did I wouldn't of probably got off of a ticket that was over $600.

Wow, long time since posting in this thread.

Anyways, tried the one delta 40 (with cats ON) and it had wussy sound.
Now, I'm gonna go all out and true dual it with Delta 40's and no cats.
Will that sound sweet?

Also, someone mentioned that w/out cats there could be emmision smell... Is it real bad?

On Summit (Or somewhere) they have stuffy ou can pour in the gas to make it smell good. Like bubble gum, flowers, etc. Don't know how well it works though lol.

You will smell "bad" without the cat's. How bad depends on the engine. You'll have unburned hydrocarbons and whatnot all running around in your exhaust..instead of taken care of it in the cat's.

If you want good sound on it, juts Y it out where you hacked off the muffler and put tips on it. Or glasspack it if you want. I chopped my muffler and with the 2.25" pipe dumping right about the front of the bed, it sounds really nice. Sorta routy on accel, burbles a bit on idle, and one ****ed off truck when romping the gas or spinning tires on slick stuff (I don't smoke my tires..but it'd roar doing that too).

Just some insight. Also...D-Flow's are EXPENSIVE. Glasspacks are 18 dollars for a Dynomax Thrust Magnum 2.25 in/2.25 out 24" glasspack. 18...vs 80+. I'd try a glasspack first and see if you like it. If you didn't like the D-flow before, you're probably not going to like it now.
