Hey guys, I'm a newbie so be nice! I just got a 1998 F-150 ex-cab a couple days ago. I've been driving for two days and now the brake lights don't work Flashers, blinkers, driving, and reverse lights all work, but the brake light doesn't. I removed a trailer hitch electrical hook-up from its holster (if that means anything). All fuses are fine and the cab brake light works.
If you guys could help me it would be really great!
As for the brake lights. If the turn signals are working then the wiring from the turnsignal switch back and the bulbs must be OK. And as the power for the brake lights starts from the fuse block then to the brake light switch then to the 3rd brake light then to the turnsignal switch I would say the problem Is probably in the turn signal switch.
so, does that mean that the steering whell should be taken apart.........basically just the turn signal piece........correct?
we just put rotors and pads in the front like and hour and half ago. Then I took it out for a test run and the lights didn't work. I'm assuming that they worked all of today. I don't know what would have triggered this problem.
Look at this diagram it may not be exactly the same as yours. Unless Ford has changed there standard wire colors the wire that is Yellow with A black stripe = left T.S green = right T. What you need to do is make sure power from the brake light switch is getting to the T.S. switch then when you hit the brakes the above described wires should be hot. If power from the brake light switch is getting to the T.S. switch then it is pretty sure the switch.
Also sometimes you can get them to work by moving the switch arm slightly.Have someone watch the brake lights while you have your foot on the brake as yor move the T.S.arm.
Ford calls the turnsignal switch the "multi-function switch. From your problem description it does sound like the mulit-function switch may be the culprit.
