The truck: 92 Explorer, 4.0L V6, 217,000 miles, AUTO.
With the engine on I noticed the fuel meter swing from about 1/8 to full and then later settle back to 1/8. The last time I saw the truck do this was years ago. It may be doing it more without my seeing it.
Is this a sign of the sender in the tank failing or something under the dash.
How easy is it to replace the transmitter/float in the tank. I know the tank has to be dropped.
I had a 85 Cougar that had the fuel meter go bad. Is this another Ford problem?
Thanks,
Reg
P.S. This is a duplicate post from the Mountaineer/Explorer forum. I got no answer there.
It could be the sending unit. Ford keeps changing how the sending unit works, but if high resistance is full, and low resistance is empty, it stands to reason if the sending unit wiper lost contact for a moment(high resistance) it could jump up to full and then settle back down to the correct reading. If may be sweeping past the bad spot when the gas is sloshing around.
