There's a combination switch (neutral safety + backup lights) attached to the top side of the steering column down by the brake pedal inside the cab. A tab sticks out of the top of the column which is connected to the gear selector. The tab engages with the combination switch and the proper electrical contacts are made depending on what gear position you are in.

ok,so nothing goes to the tranny?and just an off subject qeustion,there is a brown wire coming off the key ignition thingy and it goes through the fire wall on the left side of the engine,where does this wire go?
