Okay, I have an 2004 6.0 that makes a strange plastic flapping like sound from under the hood on the drivers side when i am on the throttle and then let off. It usually lasts for a few seconds and then settles down again.
It doesn't really sound mechanical but it's driving me crazy.
Almost like a fluctuating flapping sound.
I have looked under the hood and under the truck and i can't figure it out.
Is it when you are on the throttle hard under load and when you quickly back out of the throttle vs gradually? If so, then it is probably the built up boost being vented back out the intake.
This is normal and has been reported by a number of folks. I experience a similar thing. Most frequent description seems to be calling it a turbo burp
I was told by my dealer that this is can be cured by replacing the VGT (Varable Geometry Turbo) solenoid (located next to the Flux Capacitor ), but Ford does not make it a practice to replace these just because of the sound because it does not harm the engine in any other way.
If it is really that annoying, I would recommend that you start really complaining about it and suggest the VGT solenoid replacement fix. I did, and all of the same problems went away.
Let me guess, however, that you have about 15k to 20k miles on it already and there is a very slight hestitation from a dead stop to the first thousand rpm, right? If that's true, this might well become one of those "normal wear and tear" items...
