Amazing Ford Reps
In addition they had the 6.0 & V-10 stand alone engines displayed with cut outs. I have seen pictures but never in person so to speak.
I now understand why our oil dip sticks are virtually worthless. Besides the tip color issue...the tube path this thing has to travel to get to the case is unbelievable. No telling how much residual oil the tip picks up along the way.
Spoke with (2) factory reps. One local and the other a supposed engineer from MI. During our discussion I mentioned the dip stick path & oil level reading issues which lead to proper / improper oil fill.
Amazingly neither rep admitted to any knowledge regarding 13.5 qrts for oil changes vs 15 qrts or the issues involved with overfill. The local rep seemed blown away by this and started taking notes as he had just had a discussion with a 6.0 owner that was having problems. Typical surging, rough idle etc.
I asked if the owner had just had an oil change and the response, of course, was yes...at a dealer in East Texas. Has experienced the problems only since the change.
These two reps admitedly had no idea what to tell the owner except to return to the dealer. Bet they are having a bad 3 weeks at the fair.
To my recollection, Ford has even sent out a broadcast message on this issue which is a simple probable resolution to many of the surging / rough idle problems that shouldn't even be occuring.
Either some of the techs don't read or they don't forward the info to the oil change guys. Maybe some are just looking for additional warranty work later...who knows...but it is AMAZING.
Sorry for the long post but haven't posted in a while and just trying to catch up.
Oil Level Check Tip:
When checking the oil level on the 6.0, the vehicle must be on a level surface and the dipstick must be fully seated into the tube to ensure an accuarte reading. Do not add oil if the level is above the "MIN" line on the dipstick. Broadcast Message 1512, 1574.<!-- / message -->
I think there is another directly addressing romp etc.
Still looking.
From the manual:
Maintain the oil level between ADD and OPERATING RANGE on the
dipstick by adding oil as required. The distance from ADD to
OPERATING RANGE on the dipstick represents 1.9L (2 quarts). Do not
overfill. If the oil level exceeds OPERATING RANGE, oil consumption
may result.
It is my understanding that the 6.0 does not have a windage tray between the crank and oil pan. Subsequently, overfilling will cause foaming by the vortex caused by the crank. Foaming will cause poor performance and issues with the injectors.<!-- / message --><!-- / message -->
Rough/Surging Idle, Excessive Smoke, Lacks Power, Poor Throttle Response:
This may be accompanied by DTC P2263. Inspect all intercooler hoses and pipes and exhaust system before the turbo for leaks. Ensure the oil level is correct there are no oil leaks and all electrical connectors are secure. Check the ICP sensor as in the following bulletin. If no problems are found, make no attemp to repair the condition. Engineering is investigating. Broadcast Message 0225, 0471. SSM 16488
