i have a 93 ranger xlt 3.0 6 cyl, the problem is this high pitch kind of whinning sound coming from engine compartment, it is mostly noticable when you barely accelerate at a really low speed and rpm, i guess from first gear to second, once you get out of first the sound lessens
I have something similar on my explorer, sounds something like a vaccuum leak. It changes as the transmission shifts. I just assumed it was the sound of air being sucked into the engine through the air filter.
I have read somewhere about people having problems with noise coming from the IAC(idle air control) you may want to search the forum for info. I could also be something the drivebelt is turning like the a/c clutch or alternator or something. Maybe if you listen with the hood up, and engine running you could locate the source of the noise better. could also be some bad bearings in the trany. anyway good luck hope you find what it is.
Does this noise happen when it is cool out? I have a load noise in the front of the engine and it sounds like a a bad electric fuel pump. It only happened during 90 degree days so I wonder if it is the fan clutch?
